At WordPress.com, cancelling and refunding are two separate steps. Cancel only turns off auto-renewal. To end the plan now and get your money back, you then Remove it. Both happen in your account, without contacting support.

Refund windows

The window starts on your most recent charge for the subscription: the purchase date or the renewal date.

  • Annual, 2-year, and 3-year plans: 14 days.
  • Monthly plans: 7 days.
  • Add-ons: 14 days.
  • Domains: 96 hours (4 days) from registration or renewal. If you keep a free domain that came with your plan and ask for a refund after 96 hours, its cost is deducted from the plan refund.

Refunds are all or nothing; there is no proration. Yearly plans renew a month before they expire, so the refund window for a renewal closes about two weeks before the old term ends.

Back up first

Download a backup or export your content first if you might want it later.

Step 1: Cancel the subscription

  1. Go to the billing section of your account and select Active upgrades.
  2. Click the plan you want to cancel.
  3. At the bottom of the page, click Cancel in the "Cancel subscription" section.
  4. Review what you will lose, tick the confirmation box, and click Cancel subscription.
  5. Complete the cancellation survey.

Auto-renewal is now off. The plan stays active until its expiration date, and nothing is refunded yet.

Step 2: Remove it to get a refund

  1. Back on the purchase page, click Remove in the "Remove subscription" section.
  2. Tick the box and click Continue removal.
  3. Answer any questions and click Complete removal.

Inside the refund window, the eligible amount is refunded automatically. Refunds usually reach your card in 7 to 10 business days. Only the person who bought the subscription can cancel it.

What happens to your site

The site keeps working as a free site. Your posts, pages, and media stay, but ads return, the address goes back to .wordpress.com, and third-party themes are removed. Removing a plan immediately also removes all plugins and the content they created.

Changed your mind? While the plan is still active, turn auto-renewal back on from its purchase settings.

Moving to another host?

Migrate your site and domain first. Compare five-year costs on the WordPress.com renewal price page, or see WordPress.com against Bluehost and SiteGround.
